Project Overview:
As part of Neath Port Talbot Council’s ongoing investment into Margam Country Park, we were selected to deliver a themed playground inspired by the adjacent Grade I listed Margam Castle. The project brief focused on providing high play value for children while maintaining visual sensitivity to the historic surroundings.
Scope of Works:
- Demolition and clearance of a redundant and unsafe timber play area
- Formation of new play mounds using site-won topsoil and imported clean fill
- Installation of castle-themed modular play units, including:
- Stone-effect multi-tower structure with battlements and bridges
- Stainless steel slide
- Internal play tunnel and external climbing wall
- Rocking horses and inclusive spinner
- Installation of bark safety surfacing to all play areas
- Creation of new boundary fencing and child-safe access points
Delivery Considerations:
- The play area is located adjacent to a listed structure and within a historic parkland – all site activities were carried out with heritage conservation in mind.
- We worked closely with the council’s in-house Parks and Heritage teams to align installation methods with conservation guidance.
- Logistics and materials delivery were coordinated around the park’s calendar of public events and peak footfall periods.
Outcome:
This castle-themed play area has proved a popular and photogenic addition to the visitor offer at Margam Country Park. It demonstrates our ability to incorporate themed play elements within sensitive environments while achieving high durability and play value.
