Sanitorium Park
Client: Cardiff Council
Location: Sanatorium Park, Canton, Cardiff
Project Value: £250,000
Project Overview:
Emroch Landscapes Ltd served as the main contractor on the transformation of Sanatorium Park’s tired and underutilised playground into a large-scale, fully inclusive natural play space in the heart of Cardiff. This high-profile project was designed to increase access to outdoor play and encourage physical activity in a more naturalistic environment. The park officially reopened in June 2024.
Scope of Works:
- Demolition and removal of old equipment and safety surfacing
- Full landscaping and regrading of the site to create a naturalistic terrain, including significant grassed earthworks to form mounds and embankments
- Installation of new play equipment, including:
- Stainless steel embankment slides
- Accessible roundabout
- Inclusive swings and cradle seats
- Timber climbing units
- Play boulders and tunnels
- Laying of bonded rubber mulch surfacing and turfing
- Installation of new boundary fencing and gates
- Associated groundwork and reinstatement
Delivery Considerations:
- The project was delivered within a live public park, requiring sensitive management of site boundaries and access routes to avoid disruption to park users.
- Significant community interest was addressed via open communication with Cardiff Council and local residents.
- We coordinated closely with the equipment supplier and surfacing contractor to meet a tight delivery deadline prior to the school holidays.
Outcome:
This project was a strong demonstration of our ability to deliver a bespoke play space that marries creative design with practical construction methods. The new space has been well received by the public and widely praised on social media by both Cardiff Council and local families.
