Aberavon Seafront Playground

Aberavon Seafront Playground

Client: Neath Port Talbot Council

Location: Aberavon Seafront, Port Talbot (Aberavon Beach)

Project Value: £210,000 (approx.)

Project Overview:

Building on the area's broader coastal regeneration and tourism strategy, Emroch Landscapes Ltd was commissioned to deliver a flagship adventure playground at Aberavon Seafront. Branded around its striking “Ocean Giant” feature, the project emphasizes sustainability, inclusivity, and visual impact, blending cutting-edge design with environmental consciousness. Emroch worked closely with designer and manufacturer Kompan to breathe new life into a dated seafront play area.

Scope of Works:

  • Demolition and safe removal of existing, outdated play equipment.
  • Site preparation and installation of a captivating central play tower — the 8.9 m tall Ocean Giant — constructed partially using recycled ocean waste (e.g. nets, ropes).
  • Installation of a range of adventure play features including:
    • Climbing walls
    • Thrilling tube slide
    • Swings
    • Overhead ladder
    • Carousel
    • Nautically themed sculptural play elements (dolphins, shells)
  • Inclusive elements:
    • Quiet zone for users who need sensory respite
    • Thoughtful layout for ease of access and exit, ensuring a welcoming experience across all abilities
  • Installation of compliant safety surfacing throughout.

Delivery Considerations:

  • Funded by Neath Port Talbot Council’s £4.25 million "Green Up and Clean Up" initiative aimed at enhancing community environments.
  • Scheduled demolition began September 2, 2024, with installation starting a week later and completed over approximately eight weeks.
  • Despite being in a high-traffic beachfront area, works were carefully phased with safety fencing, signage, and minimal disruption to public access.

Outcome:

The new Aberavon Seafront Playground serves as a true destination play attraction — its Ocean Giant element delivers that memorable “wow factor” while demonstrating sustainability through recycled materials. Since opening, the feature has attracted families and tourists alike, boosting the vitality and appeal of the seafront. Its access‑friendly design and inclusive considerations ensure children of varying needs can enjoy the space safely and comfortably. Early feedback suggests the playground is on track to becoming a beloved and iconic feature of the local community.
